Sunday was the most amazing day, perhaps in part because of the extraordinary and moving ceremony from Sunte, Samson and Parashi the night before? I was lucky to bump into Luca - after the chaos of getting to the start on time – in the mass of runners before the start gun fired, so we were able to keep each other company (and warm – thanks for the leg rub Luca!) and our nerves at bay and then we were off. After about three miles in Edward and Ala and Phil ran past me and we became a little Maasai warrier tribe that swept up Sunte at one point, and we stayed together for about 16 miles before crowds on the bridge going into Manhattan swept us apart. The supporters and music all the way around were fabulous – from the hipster indie rock in Williamsburg to dance music in the Bronx to the song "YMCA" playing around mile 21 which even managed to distract me from the pain in my legs for a good 30 seconds or so, as all the runners around did the ridiculous actions as we ran. I realized inside Central Park that I was within reach of my target time (3 hours 45 mins), I started to up my pace, ignoring the screams from my legs and my final mile was the fastest of the whole course. And I got to hug Parashi who had finished shortly before me, just after I crossed the finishing line. That made it even more special. I just wish I had ignored the marshals to hang around to congratulate the rest of the team as they came in. How did I do? 3 hours, 43 minutes and 20 seconds. A very satisfying finale to great experience. It was a privilege to have been involved. And a big thank you to all those that donated to MWCT on my behalf.
