I finished in 4:15.30. The first 20 miles were incredibly, dare I say it, fun. I was in heaven listening to the bands, the bagpipers and the general cheering of the crowds. The last 6.2 miles were incredible but very, very hard. As I ran up the ramp for the Willis Avenue bridge, I was starting to feel the tank empty and it was a pure mental challenge.
Highlights for me:
- Bagpipers on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. Being 13 days from marrying a Scottish woman, I admit that my eyes filled with tears at the stirring sound
- The sign that said, “If the marathon were easy, it would be your mother.”
Seeing Maasai supporters on the East Drive in Central Park in the final miles – it was a huge boost at a critical time
